NO CHARGE FOR VOTER REGISTRATION

Greetings Montserrat

 

My name is Barrington B. Chalmers, the Supervisor of Elections for the 2024 general election. On behalf of the Electoral Commission, I am making this statement of clarification in respect/regards to continuous voter registration.

Persons who are not yet on the voters list and wish to become registered voters are required to fill out an application form to request that their names be listed on the voters list. Forms can be collected from the Electoral Office situated in the Department of Legislature, Farara Plaza, Brades or downloaded from our website at www.electoralcommission.ms

Please note that:

  1. The Registry’s Office at the Montserrat Courthouse has committed to notarize or take sworn statements/applications for the purpose of voter registration FREE of charge upon presentation of a valid ID or Simply put, there is no need to purchase stamps nor pay processing fees as required once an ID is presented.
  2. I want to state emphatically that at no time has the Electoral Commission or any one working under the supervision of the Commission received any payment, taken any processing fee, or monetary gift or otherwise in order to register someone to vote or approve their

We encourage and recognize the right of all persons who qualify and are eligible under the Elections Act, Section 12, to freely exercise their franchise to vote without any undue hinderance or obstruction. We will only approve or reject all applications based on the following criteria:

  1. Verification of statements made in the application by the relevant government offices, to include Immigration and
  2. If the person meets the requirements laid out in Section 12 of the Elections Act, 1.04 which states:

Subject to subsection (2), every person who—

  1. has attained the age of eighteen years;
  2. is not a person of unsound mind so found under any law in force in Montserrat;
  3. is a Commonwealth citizen;
  4. has resided in Montserrat for thirty-six months immediately preceding the date of registration as a voter or is domiciled in Montserrat and is resident therein at the date of such registration.
  5. is not disqualified under this Act from being registered as a voter,

 

Shall be entitled to be registered as a voter and, when registered, to vote at an election.

 

If anyone has any knowledge or evidence of payment given or received to be on the voters’ list, I ask you to present it to myself or any member of the commission, after which I pledge to address it immediately.
